What private label supplement manufacturing is

Supplements are the deepest sourcing book in private label. Capsules, gummies, powders, liquids, stick-packs, RTDs — every format has a different MOQ, lead time, and cost curve. The decision tree is simple: which format matches the active, which facility holds the relevant cGMP and audited certification, and what does the same SKU cost across three quotes. Private Label Supply maintains a sourcing roster filtered by 21 CFR Part 111 cGMP registration, NSF audit status, and category-specific compliance — we only put you in front of facilities that can actually ship to a reputable retailer.

[01] // Who briefs this category

Buyers we typically work with on this.

[BUYER 01]

DTC supplement founders

You have a category thesis (gut, sleep, longevity, performance) and an audience. You need stock-formula speed-to-market.

[BUYER 02]

Sport and performance brands

You sell to athletes or performance-oriented consumers. NSF Certified for Sport is non-negotiable. We filter out facilities without it.

[BUYER 03]

Practitioner brands

You see patients (chiropractor, naturopath, MD) and want a private practitioner line. Higher-margin SKUs, smaller runs, channel-protected.

[BUYER 04]

Existing supplement brands launching SKU 5+

You have proven SKUs. You are layering in adjacent categories. You need a sourcing partner that scales without re-pitching every PO.

[03] // How it works

Brief to landed inventory in supplements.

  1. PHASE 01 Week 1

    Brief & format match

    Active(s), claim ambition, target retail price, certifications, channel. We map format options against your spec.

  2. PHASE 02 Week 1-3

    Facility shortlist & sample

    Three cGMP-registered candidates with COA samples. We narrow to one based on sample testing and certification verification.

  3. PHASE 03 Week 3-5

    Spec lock & label design

    Stock formula confirmed, label dieline produced against the chosen container, supplement facts panel formatted to FDA template.

  4. PHASE 04 Week 5-9

    PO & first production

    PO direct to facility. Lot test, fill, label, case-pack, palletize. COA per lot.

  5. PHASE 05 Week 9-10

    Land + launch

    Goods land at 3PL. Inbound complete. Launch inventory live.

// Total6-10 weeks for stock-formula private label. 14-22 weeks for contract manufacturing of a custom formula.

[04] // Cost & MOQ economics

Where supplements cost actually lives.

Supplement private-label economics break the same as the rest of the category — the first run is expensive, reorders compound. Format choice is the bigger lever than facility choice for cost.

  • [01] Capsules at 500-unit MOQ typically price 30-50 percent above the 5,000-unit tier.
  • [02] Gummies are the most expensive format on a per-unit basis because of pectin/gelatin slurry economics, active overage, and stability testing requirements.
  • [03] Powders are sensitive to fill weight — a 30-serving tub at 7g per serving costs more in raw material and packaging than a 60-serving tub at 3g per serving.
  • [04] Certification scope is a real cost line. NSF Certified for Sport adds $0.30-$0.80/u depending on volume. USDA Organic adds 15-30 percent on raw input cost because organic actives price higher.
  • [05] Landed cost is the only number that matters. Per-unit + freight + duty + 3PL inbound. The cheapest factory rarely wins on landed.
[05] // What can go wrong

Risk register for supplements.

Every line below has cost a real operator real money. Here is the tell, and the fix.

RISK 01

Manufacturer ghosting after PO

// Tell

Email response slows. Production milestones miss. Updates from the freight forwarder, not the factory.

// Fix

Reference checks. Named production-coordinator contact. 50/50 deposit/shipping payment terms.

RISK 02

Disease claim slipped onto the label

// Tell

Marketing wrote 'cures insomnia' instead of 'supports sleep.' FDA warning letter or Amazon takedown.

// Fix

Run all claim language through a regulatory lens before label print. Structure-function only. Required FDA disclaimer block on every claim.

RISK 03

Heavy metal failure on lot test

// Tell

Routine COA shows lead or cadmium above acceptable limit. Lot rejected. Reorder pushed.

// Fix

Source-side testing on raw inputs before they hit the line. Insist on heavy-metal panel on every COA.

RISK 04

Fake 'FDA approved' claim

// Tell

Marketing copy or label includes 'FDA approved' — a phrase that legally cannot apply to supplements.

// Fix

FDA does not approve supplements. Use 'FDA-registered facility' if accurate. Audit every page of marketing copy before publish.

RISK 05

NDI ambush

// Tell

Active you sourced was never properly NDI-notified by the original manufacturer. FDA challenges. SKU pulled.

// Fix

NDI status verification on every novel active. Use NIH ODS database and FDA NDI letter database to confirm.

[06] // Regulatory snapshot

What rules govern supplements.

Dietary supplements in the US sit under DSHEA (Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994) and FDA's 21 CFR Part 111 cGMP regulation. FDA does not pre-approve supplement formulas — manufacturers self-determine compliance and FDA inspects. Be precise on claims: structure-function claims are allowed with disclaimers; disease claims are not.

[08] // FAQ

Common questions about supplements.

What's the MOQ on a private label supplement?

Most private-label supplement runs start at 500 units for capsules and 1,000 units for gummies, powders, and bars. Custom contract manufacturing typically requires 2,500-5,000 unit minimums. Sample runs of 100-250 units are available for an upcharge at select facilities.

Do I need FDA approval for my supplement?

No. FDA does not approve supplement formulas. Manufacturers self-determine compliance with 21 CFR Part 111 cGMP and FDA inspects. Manufacturers must register their facility with FDA. Novel actives may require an NDI notification 75 days before marketing.

How long does private label supplement manufacturing take?

6-10 weeks for stock-formula private label with custom labels. 14-22 weeks for contract manufacturing of a custom formula. Gummies and beverages are at the long end of every range.

What certifications do I need for retail?

21 CFR Part 111 cGMP at the facility is the baseline for any reputable retailer. NSF Certified for Sport is required for pro-sport channels. USDA Organic if claiming 'Organic.' SQF for any retailer with food-safety requirements (Whole Foods, Sprouts, Costco). Verify each via the issuing body's registry.

Can I private label probiotics?

Yes, but probiotics are temperature-sensitive. Verify the facility maintains cold-chain or refrigerated storage. Confirm CFU count at expiration (not at manufacture) on the label. Some retailers require refrigerated transport — confirm with your 3PL before launch.

What's the cost per unit for private label supplements?

Indicative ranges: capsules $1.40-$3.20/u at first-run MOQ, gummies $1.80-$3.80/u, powders $2.20-$5.40/u, liquids $1.90-$4.20/u, soft chews $1.60-$3.40/u. Final cost depends on fill weight, container, label complexity, certifications, run size.

Can I claim 'made in USA' on my supplement?

Only if the substantial transformation of US-origin inputs occurred in the US per the FTC standard. Manufacturer location alone is not sufficient. Most supplement raw materials (especially botanicals) are sourced internationally — confirm input origin before adding the claim.

Are private label supplements safe?

Private-label supplements manufactured at FDA-registered, cGMP-compliant facilities are produced to the same quality standard as the facility's branded SKUs — they share the line. Risk lives in unverified facilities. Always confirm cGMP and ask for a recent COA before signing.
